(PJ’s Custom DJ Software)

Hamilton, NJ Disc Jockey, PJ (the DJ) Rebovich has finally taken the leap to convert his music library from CD’s to digital files. Digital DJ technology has been around for a few years, but PJ wanted to make sure that the software was free of flaws and worth the investment. Most importantly, he wanted to ensure that his clients would not get the impression that he was just setting-up a pre-programmed playlist (like an iPod).
After being in the industry for eleven years, PJ has become extremely skilled with regard to CD-format music mixing. Much of his technique requires the skilled use of his hands to control the music (like a turntable). For that reason, PJ was worried that this ability would be hindered by using a laptop.
When looking back on the various generations of DJ’s, it is easy to see why DJ’s come and go. As technology advances, traditional DJ’s find many challenges when trying to keep up. In the past, Vinyl DJ’s had to convert to CD technology. The switch was quite a challenging one. In addition to the high-cost in buying the new equipment, the DJ had invest in a new music library. Unlike the vinyl to CD conversion, CD to digital conversion is much less expensive; however it is a time-consuming process to “rip” each individual CD onto a computer hard drive.
PJ’s new software is specifically designed to simulate a pair of CD players, so PJ has found the conversion to be quite simple to get used to. Instead of searching through thousands of songs in books full of CD’s, PJ can simply search his computer library to instantly find the song he is looking for, which allows him to be more versatile.
PJ was asked why hiring a DJ is better than using an iPod to play music for a party. He replied, “Unlike an iPod, this software allows professional DJ’s to spontaneously mix music that is customized the the dynamics of the party. I have never seen an iPod intelligent enough to seemlessly match beats and select songs that reflect the ‘mood’ of the event in real time. It’s not just a matter of what songs are played… It’s all about HOW the songs are played. Expert DJ’s are extremely skilled in the art of entertainment and no mp3 playlist will ever take their place in the market.”
PJ also added that the cost to buy an iPod and enough music to fill four hours would most likely exceed the expense of hiring a professional (with pro-grade equipment) for the night. Not to mention, your guests would have a much better time with a live DJ.
